How to find Instituto Iguana and how to get to Mazunte
Mazunte is a small village on the Pacific Coast of Oaxaca, in the south of Mexico. n here you will find information about how to arrive to our school and how to get to Mazunte from different locations.
In Mazunte
Instituto Iguana is located about a 10-minute walk from the village center, at the top of a hill.
From the main street bridge, it’s a 5–10 minute walk, depending on your pace. If you are facing the dry stream with your back to the ocean, cross the main road and head away from the beach. Take the street on the left side of the stream. At the start of that street, you’ll see a sign "Instituto Iguana" on your top right side. Continue straight on that street for about 2 minutes until you find another sign. Turn left onto that small street. Walk for less than a minute, and you’ll see another sign indicating a steep dirt road on the right. Walk up that road for about 2 minutes until you see a large rock with an iguana image. Our beautiful school will be on your left!
From Pochutla (San Pedro Pochutla)
Pochutla is the main town next to Mazunte. If you’re coming to Mazunte by bus from Mexico City, Oaxaca, Chiapas, or most other places, you’ll likely pass through Pochutla. A private taxi from Pochutla to Mazunte should cost around $250–$300 MXN pesos. Public transport options are called “Pasajeras” or “Colectivos,” and they only accept cash, preferably small bills. The Pasajeras/Colectivos stop at Calle Las Palmas. This street is directly across from a green building named “First Cash,” which is less than a 5-minute walk from the ADO terminal and Lineas Unidas. They run every 20–30 minutes, cost $20–$25 per person to Mazunte, and take about 30 to 40 minutes depending on traffic. You might also find taxis parked there, which are usually shared and charge a similar price to the Pasajera/Colectivo. Always ask the taxi price before getting in.
From Puerto Escondido
Puerto Escondido is about 45 Minutes north of Mazunte. Take a taxi from inside the airport and ask them to bring you all the way to Mazunte (fixed airport price), or walk out of the airport towards the highway to get a more affordable taxi (around $1000 MXN pesos). An even more affordable, but less quick option is to grab a taxi (airport or city cab) and ask them to drop you at Transportes Delfines and take any colectivo van that is heading towards Pochutla. Important note: ask the driver to drop you off at “El Cruce de San Antonio para Mazunte” , so don’t go all the way to Pochutla. From there, wait for the colectivo that will take you to Mazunte; they go by every 20-30 minutes, they only take cash and the last ones goes by around 19:45. If you do go all the way to Pochutla, then follow the steps given in “From Pochutla”. Another option is to go from the airport to the ADO station very close to Transportes Delfines. Take a bus towards Pochutla or Huatulco but let them know you will get off at “El Cruce de San Antonio para Mazunte” so you don’t have to pay the full price, and confirm the drop-off place with the driver. This option is less frequent and slower, but the buses tend to be bigger and more comfortable.
